How to Choose Safe Toys for Babies and Toddlers: A Safety Checklist

Little Genius Team6 min read

As parents, toy safety is non-negotiable. But navigating safety standards, age recommendations, and material certifications can feel overwhelming. Here's a clear, actionable guide to choosing safe toys for your little ones.

The Big Three Safety Standards

When shopping for toys, look for these certifications:

  • ASTM F963 — The U.S. standard for toy safety. Covers mechanical hazards, flammability, chemical content, and more. Required for toys sold in the U.S.
  • EN71 — The European safety standard, often considered even stricter than ASTM. Covers mechanical/physical properties, flammability, and chemical migration.
  • CPSIA — The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. Mandates third-party testing for lead, phthalates, and other heavy metals in children's products.

At Little Genius Co., we source every product against all three standards and require supplier safety documentation before it joins the catalog.

Age-Appropriate Play

Age recommendations aren't just about skill level — they're primarily about safety:

  • 0–12 months: No small parts, no strings longer than 12 inches, no sharp edges. Everything goes in the mouth at this age, so materials must be non-toxic and large enough to pass the choke tube test.
  • 1–3 years: Still avoid small parts (the choking hazard warning exists for a reason). Look for rounded edges, stable bases on stacking toys, and finishes that can withstand teething.
  • 3–5 years: Small parts become acceptable, but check that paint and finishes are still non-toxic. Magnets in toys should be large and securely enclosed.

Materials Matter

Not all wood is equal. Here's what to look for:

  • Hardwoods (beech, maple, birch) are durable and splinter-resistant. Softwoods like pine can dent and splinter more easily.
  • Water-based finishes are the gold standard. They're non-toxic even if chewed, and they don't off-gas VOCs.
  • Food-grade dyes for colored toys ensure safety even for the most enthusiastic teethers.
  • Avoid toys with a strong chemical smell, peeling paint, or rough/splintering surfaces.
